One of my criticisms would be for some truly useful research to happen on who actually uses the 'pro-suicide' websites and where they're coming from - it may well be social networks.Paul Canninghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17499916652508144662noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-387284174922871714.post-25255555409198126192008-04-18T13:14:00.000+01:002008-04-18T13:14:00.000+01:00Hi Paul, great to see someone has picked up on thi...Hi Paul, great to see someone has picked up on this article with some real critique - headline-grabbing research helps neither the headlines nor research, and should be pointed out as much as possible, IMHO.

The argument being made by the research seems quite akin to those trying to clamp down on violence in video games or in films, I think. The form of media (generally via screen) is often an easy-to-finger scapegoat, with more important (but difficult to assess/remedy) factors being ignored as a result.

The social side of the internet - i.e. communication, rather than searching - is completely missed in the research, for example. People don't just a) get suicidal, then b) use Google. Depression and suicide are founded and fostered in social contexts. Tying the research into on-line social networking goes some way to addressing this, but still goes for the easiest-to-address link in the very-long chain.

Alas, I think your last point about "righteous effort" is spot on - it's far more important these days to look like you're speaking out in someone else's interests, rather than actually do something in someone else's interests.Scribehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08757616056135886893noreply@blogger.com
